At 10 years of age, Janet Cook was trying her luck at synchronized swimming. There was just one problem. "I sunk more than I floated," she confessed. So she made the switch to speed swimming and never looked back. In 1998, the Saskatoon native moved to Hamilton in order to join coach Gaye Stratten (Joanne Malar's former coach) and the McMaster Marauders. She has been named female athlete of the year in her first two years at the university while last season she won the OUA female athlete of the year award and was a CIAU All-Canadian.

 Somehow she still finds the time to give back to the community as well. In her spare time, you can find her volunteering with "Habitat for Humanity", reading to kindergarten children and helping other McMaster athletes get acclimated to student-athlete life. Last spring she attended the Spring Nationals in Victoria and exceeded all her expectations winning silver in the 50 freestyle. She qualified for the Olympics at trials in the 4X100 freestyle relay.
