 Winning an Olympic gold medal won't be the biggest challenge of Jacinthe Taillon's career. The 23-year-old conquered a greater battle when she had a successful surgical removal of a cancerous tumor from her thyroid gland in February 1998. Taillon never got sick and didn't need chemotherapy treatment. The operation was a complete success and chances of reoccurrence are almost nil. In fact two months after the surgery she helped Canada to a bronze medal at an international meet in Japan.

 Taillon, who is from St-Eustache, Que., but now lives and trains in Etobicoke, started synchro at age seven after she had completed all her swimming Red Cross courses. She was also involved in theatre as a child and says that helped with her self-expression and creativity in synchro. She would like to pursue an acting career. She won two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games placing first in duet and team. At the Olympics she'll compete only in team because her partner Kasia Kulesza of Laval, QC, didn't qualify for the Olympic squad.
