Bopper babe's CD glib collection of cliches

By CRAIG MacINNIS -- Hamilton Spectator

...BABY ONE MORE TIME
Britney Spears
(Jive/BMG 74321 41651)

Album Cover Teenybop stars tend to divide into two camps -- the precociously talented (Jonny Lang, LeAnn Rimes) and the shrewdly marketed (Tiffany, Menudo). Seventeen-year-old Britney Spears falls into the latter category, a chirpy pop cipher whose chief claim to fame, prior to the launch of her fabulous recording career, was a stint in Disney's Mickey Mouse club.

Mickey Mouse is right. Produced by Max Martin of Backstreet Boys fame, ... Baby One More Time offers a glib compendium of soul/pop cliches, served with a giddy, uptempo verve that recalls Debbie Gibson on a chocolate high.

Mainly, it's harmless stuff, an aural companion to Tiger Beat magazine. But the Louisiana native's handlers can't resist the urge to sexualize their young star in ways that some will find objectionable.

To wit, the CD's foldout poster strategically opens onto a view of Spears's crotch, while the songs (Born To Make You Happy, Thinkin' About You) verge on the sort of boy-worshipping dreck that even Tiffany would have sniffedat.
