Legendary coach records 800th win

November 16, 1998

TORONTO -- Bert Templeton, head coach and general manager of the Sudbury Wolves recorded the 800th win in his illustrious career as the Wolves defeated the Oshawa Generals by a score of 4-2 tonight in Ontario Hockey League play.

Templeton, 59, became just the second coach in the history of the Canadian Hockey League to record 800 wins, following Ottawa 67's coach and general manager Brian Kilrea who recorded his 800th win in September, 1998.

"This outstanding accomplishment is a testament to the dedication that Bert has made to the Ontario Hockey League and the many players who have played for him during the past 23 seasons," stated OHL Commissioner David Branch following the game. "His success speaks volumes about the type of character that Bert has brought to the arena each and every day of his distinguished career."

Templeton, whose OHL coaching career began with the Hamilton Fincups in 1974, also coached the Niagara Falls Flyers, North Bay Centennials and Barrie Colts. He joined the Wolves organization this past summer after four seasons with the Colts.

TempletonŐs career has been highlighted with a Memorial Cup and OHL championship with Hamilton in 1976 and an OHL Championship with North Bay in 1994. The Irvine, Scotland native has been honoured as the OHL Coach of the Year in 1974-75 and 1993-94 and the OHL Executive of the Year in 1991-92 and 1995-96. He was named Canadian Hockey League Coach of the Year in 1993-94 and CHL Executive of the Year in 1991-92.
