CN Tower

Family Discoveries: Toronto

By PHIL WILLIAMS -- CanadianParents.ca

The skyline is defined by this building no matter how you approach Toronto - air, water or ground transport gives you the same view of the World's Tallest Building. Standing over 1800 feet tall (553 metres to be exact) this stunning structure is aptly called Canada's Wonder of the World. Located at the base of the Rogers Centre - home of the Toronto Blue Jays - and just minutes from numerous other famous Toronto landmarks and hotels, the location is great.

Upon entry it seems a little confusing at first - there is a virtual sea of humanity with other tourists and quite a few bus trips arriving too but it is a controlled atmosphere of confusion and that makes it all the more bearable. Staff are very friendly and helpful in controlling the chaos.

Something that we found very comforting here was the security. Before you even get close to an elevator or an upper floor in any way, you are checked with a wand, must stand in a mechanism that checks your body for explosives dust via quick puffs of air and have any bags you have thoroughly searched as well. We highly recommend you arrive early if you plan on visiting on a weekend as this process can take a while.

Once you have undergone this thorough but well-needed procedure, you head to the elevator and take the exciting open window trip up to the observation deck and an incredible view of the city and outlying areas. Quick note here, be sure to bring a pair of binoculars so you can take your time enjoying the view. If you forget them, there are a few strategically placed coin operated binoculars you can use for a 3-minute look.

Once on this level the most exciting part for my family was the glass floor that allowed you to look all the way to street level. It was fun to watch grown adults tread lightly with great trepidation while small children and babies with no fear tore back and forth across the glass floor totally oblivious to what would happen if the floor were not there. While you could take your own snapshots if you wanted, we opted to pay 20 dollars and allow a specially placed camera on a track over our heads to take our photo looking down at all four of us with the street over 1100 feet below! It was a great professionally-taken shot that will serve as a great keepsake for our family for years to come.

It was lunchtime and we decided to stop by Horizons Café for lunch. Lunch was great with lots of variety and choice for the whole family and enjoying the view while you ponder your next point of exploration was a great way to recharge our batteries. Once we were finished lunch we headed up to the Skypod - which at 1,465 feet - is the world's highest public observation deck.

Now just because you are done there, that doesn't mean the fun is done just yet - no way! If you head back to the ground floor, you can enjoy "To the Top:The Movie" - a 15-minute documentary showing the making of the CN Tower.

There is also the motion simulator ride LEGO Racers :The Ride that has LEGO Racer Max Axel dueling across deserts, ice flows and urban jungles with archrival Sever. This was a lot of fun and lasted long enough to enjoy without being too over the top but make note, the little ones have to be at least 42 inches tall to ride.

If your kids still need to have their senses spiked a little more before you leave, there is also a huge arcade with the latest interactive simulation arcade games for them to enjoy.

Now the cost may seem a little steep to some at 32 dollars each before tax but remember what you get for that price - Look Out + Glass Floor + Skypod + Movie + Motion Simulator Ride. And don't forget - the CN Tower is one of the crowning symbols that defines our country to the world - so it almost seems irresponsible not to make a stop here if the City of Toronto is on your family getaway list. Each year, approximately 2 million people visit the CN Tower to take in the breath-taking view and enjoy all the attractions it has to offer and it is easy to see why.

We got there when it opened and it took us about 4 hours to enjoy all that the Tower had to offer.
