CANCUN, Mexico -- Club Med Cancun Yucatan has rebuilt after hurricane Wilma. It has also decided to rebrand itself -- gone are the all-night wild single parties and in is a full list of activities for families. The manana attitude does not seem to exist in Cancun. The popular touist resort city has taken just a year to re-build after the devastating damage caused by hurricane Wilma. About US$1.5 billion has been spent rebuilding Cancun and the famous white-sand beaches have been restored, thanks to pumping in 2.7-million cubic metres of sand. Taking the brunt of the Wilma winds was Club Med Cancun, Yucatan, which is situated at the end of the peninsula.
But the famous resort decided to turn its lemons into lemonade. It not only rebuilt, but the resort has dumped its party adults only atmosphere for a more upscale family friendly one. There are a new kid clubs (which will basically entertain children from dawn to dusk and beyond) and the baby welcome kit, which is waiting for guests in their room, includes a mini-tub, high-chair, crib, stroller, and bottle warmer. The year-long US$24 million renovations also upped the wow factor. "We want to make Club Med synonymous with refinement," said Cedric Gobilliard, president and CEO, North America, at the resort's official reopening last month.
While not quite a luxury resort, this Club Med is impressive. The Marc Hertrich studio of Paris, has done an outstanding job of redesigning the 22-acre all-inclusive. Rich indigenous colours are a welcome break from the typical pastel palette. The contemporary design also boasts a variety of great spots to relax -- cuddle up on a canopied loveseat, chat with friends on sofas by the pools, read a book on a lounge chair on the beach, or do nothing at all with friends in the pillow pit by the lagoon. Even if you don't stop, just seeing these vignettes decreases the stress. And unlike some all-inclusives that nickle-and- dime you to death, for as low as US$1,200 per person, your a seven-night stay includes alcohol and sports. The incredible sport choices range from fitness classes to tennis, water-skiing to snorkeling, sailing to windsurfing, street hockey to beach volleyball, or kayaking to flying trapeze.
While the trapeze looks daunting at first, it ended up proving addictive to many guests. Some spent entire afternoons happily learning new tricks -- the ultimate being able to release from the first bar and be caught by an employee on the second. The snorkeling (all equipment provided) at Club Med Cancun is so impressive, other resorts bring boat loads of people to the edge of the property to partake. With so much to do at Club Med, one may not want to leave. However, with every week-long stay, comes a free half-day trip to the pyramid ruins of El Meco. Though not as impressive as nearby Mayan sites such as Tulum and Chichen Itza, it's a great and more intimate introduction to this fascinating culture.
