Party in Paris

By ILONA KAUREMSZKY -- Special to Sun Media

Q: We'll be in Paris for a couple of weeks this summer. Could you give us a list of some summer events?

-- V. Perrin, Toronto

A: Here are my favourite summer events in Paris:

Plunk down on a picnic blanket and prepare to be transported to another world as you hear the sounds of "Fete de la Musique" that takes place on the first day of summer, June 21. This one-day annual summer event, which is celebrating its 24th year, features musicians from all over the world performing free concerts in venues throughout Paris.

Next, pencil in July 14 for Bastille Day. Considered France's most important national holiday, it commemorates the storming of the Bastille that marked the beginning of the French Revolution. Be prepared to watch lots of dancing on the eve of "14 Juillet" especially at the Place de la Bastille.

The local fire stations are also converted into mini dance halls. Make sure you stand along the Champs Elysees for views of the military parade which starts from the Arc de Triomphe and finishes at the Place de la Concorde.

Celebrations and huge firework displays occur all over France but the biggest party happens in Paris. At night, crowds gather on the Champs de Mars to watch the sky light up with fireworks that illuminate the Eiffel Tower.

Q: What is open jaw? I heard someone use this word the other day when they talked about booking their plane ticket. Thanks.

-- H. Ungaro, Scarborough

A: This is industry lingo used when you fly into one city and fly out from another.

If you want to fly to Paris from Toronto but would like to return to Toronto from London, you would say you need an open jaw ticket. Price wise, it makes a whole world of difference. You don't need to book two one-way tickets, which would cost you a bundle. You may need to shop around for a carrier that will give you the best price on an open jaw reservation. Typically, the open jaw price would be calculated as half of the air price to each of the cities plus taxes. See your travel agent for more details.
