New York City wants you to celebrate the Oscars in the week leading up to Hollywood's biggest event.

"New York City has set the scene for countless Academy Award–winning films and there has never been a better opportunity for residents and visitors to formally celebrate the unique connection the City has to film history," said George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Company.

The Film Society of Lincoln Centre will feature New York-based films, film enthusiasts can see an Oscar statue at The Shops at Columbus Circle in Time Warner Centre, and city tours that include hitting movie hot spots will have special deals. The Oscars are this Sunday.

Organizers of the 24th annual Whale Festival held on the west coast of Vancouver Island are planning more than 70 events to give visitors "a real tast of West Coast life and a deeper understanding of our extraordinary marine and forest ecosystems," said Pacific Rim Whale Festival Coordinator, Marla Barker in a release.

"The Festival coincides with the onset of spring on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, which typically begins weeks earlier than Eastern North American destinations, and the annual return of migrating Pacific grey whales to the area's coastal waters," Barker added.

Flagstones from a 1,500-year-old street were discovered this month during an excavation in the Old City of Jerusalem and will be a must-see stop for visitors. The ancient street follows the same course as the present-day David Street in the Old City and provides evidence supporting the Madaba Map -- a 1,400-year-old mosaic map which depicted the Land of Israel in the Byzantine period and the entrance to Jerusalem from the west that led to a single, central thoroughfare on that side of the city. The mosaic is believed to be from the largest bustling street during the Christian rule of Jerusalem.

In a poll conducted by tripswithpets.com 53% of respondents said they make sure their pets have a safe trip by taking precautions. The vehicle pet barrier, which is generally used in the cargo area of a vehicle, was the most popular pet travel restraint in the survey, cited to be used by 41% of pet owner respondents while 32% of pet owners in the poll reported putting their pet in a travel crate or carrier while inside the car.

Pet safety belts were used by 9%, while 8% used a pet car seat.

But 47% of people who took the survey say they let their pet have free reign of the vehicle on trips, which can cause problems such as the pet can get out in the case of an accident and be hit, a dog can do damage to their eyes by sticking their heads out the window and having a pet on your lap can impair driving.
