Cash alternatives when travelling

By DOUG ENGLISH, QMI Agency

Prepaid cards are being touted as a smart alternative to carrying cash. You load them with a specified amount at the time of purchase and use them wherever the card issuer is honoured. Visa says the advantages of its TravelMoney card include 24-hour cash access. Multiple cards can be purchased and given to a travel companion or kept as instant replacement cards in case or loss or theft.

Marlin Travel sells something called Cash Passport through its agencies. It says the cards are becoming increasingly popular with travellers who want the convenience of a bank card without worrying about overspending, hidden charges or security.

Before signing up, keep in mind that the acceptance of credit cards, debit cards and what have you isn't as high everywhere as it is here. Smart travellers always carry some currency and coins of the country they're visiting.
