Airfare in Canada on the rise

By QMI Agency

The trend of falling airfare that followed the recession ended in 2010, according to Statistics Canada.

Average domestic air fares rose 1.5% in the first quarter of 2010 from the same period in 2009, but international air fares continued to drop, dipping 0.7%. The average fare for both categories was $235.50.

Vancouver, host of the 2010 Olympic Games, saw prices for the average flight soar as high as 10% higher than normal thanks to heavy demand from the Olympics.

Only fares for Air Canada, Air Transat and WestJet were used for the statistics.
