Q: Are the scenic caves at Blue Mountain open at this time of year?
A: Although the scenic caves at Scenic Caves Nature Adventures are closed for the season, re-opening in May, you can still enjoy more than 200 hectares of beautiful snowcovered forests where there are 200 year old oaks. Slide into those cross-country skis or strap on a pair of snowshoes to travel the 16km of powder white groomed trails. Scenic Caves Nature Adventures owner and eco buff Rob Thorburn rents equipment if you don't have your own. Call Scenic Caves Nordic Centre, 705-446-0256 go to sceniccaves.com. They are located at Scenic Caves Rd in., Blue Mountain, 10 km west of Collingwood, along Mountain Rd.
Q: I would like to visit Cape Dorset, Nunavut this summer and participate in some summer activities. Is there any other way (ferryboat, etc ...) besides airway to Cape Dorset during the summer?
A: Brian Webb, Marketing Officer for Nunavut Tourism, reports that there a few cruise ships travel through Cape Dorset as part of their itinerary. "But there are no boats that provide passage just to Cape Dorset which would allow you to get off and stay in the community," he notes. Nunavut Tourism hasn't yet received the names of cruise ships that will be visiting this summer. However, last year M/V Orlova cruise liner from Quark Expeditions (quarkexpeditions.com) and cruises from Adventure Canada (adventurecanada.com) arrived in Dorset. Most communities have summer festivals and events. "They are rarely planned this far in advance. We call it Northern time," says Brian. Keep checking with Nunavut Tourism at nunavuttourism.com or call 866-686-2888.
All communities celebrate Aboriginal Day, June 21, Canada Day, July 1 and Nunavut Day, July 9th. This story was posted on Fri, March 4, 2005 More HeadlinesGeocaching catching on in the BadlandsShop 'til you drop in N.Y.C. Many attractions in Seattle Running with sled dogs in Alaska Touring Berlin |
