Q: My five girlfriends and I usually get away every summer for four days. We're trying to find someplace to go this year and I'm having trouble finding a spot to please all. Some of the wishlist includes golfing, spas, swimming, tanning, horseback riding and nightlife. Just about anywhere in Ontario is game. Can you suggest a website or something that can lead me to possibilities? Any and every suggestion is most appreciated. Thank you. -- J. Haffey, Toronto A: A virtual playground in our own backyard, Ontario's cottage country comes to life in summer. There are hundreds of resorts from which to chose. For research, Ontario Tourism has an excellent website -- ontariotravel.net -- that can help you narrow down your options. Here are a few suggestions:
- For a short getaway, you really can't go wrong in the Niagara region where there is a wonderful variety of accommodation -- from full service resort-hotels with luxe spa to cosy inns. There are many golf courses, fine dining restaurants and other activities nearby. - In Huntsville, Deerhurst Resort is a perennial favourite that offers plenty of activities. While Grammy Award-winner Shania Twain doesn't perform on the Deerhurst stage anymore, there's still plenty of nighttime entertainment. In the daylight hours, you can try one of the two 18-hole golf courses then finish off with a rejuvenating spa treatment. There's horseback riding, a tennis court and boating, too. The 800-acre resort is situated along Peninsula Lake. For information, see deerhurstresort.com or call 1-800-461-4393.
- The lakeside Taboo Resort Golf and Conference Centre, which is reopening today after a six-month renovation. Set amid 405 hectares of rocky outcroppings and windswept trees, Taboo is a year-round luxury resort that also doubles as the home course of PGA winner and Masters Champ, Mike Weir. Amazing cuisine, five pools, a health club and horseback riding are some of the many summer activities. For more information, visit tabooresort.com or call 1-800-461-0236. - Another neat excursion that would give the girls some bonding time is to explore Muskoka by boat. The Muskoka Lakes Navigation and Hotel Co. has cruises that range from 90 minutes to two days aboard the historic RMS Segwun, Wenonah II and Wanda III. Sail-and-stay packages allow passengers to sleep in one of the posh Muskoka hotels. See segwun.com. Q: We recently met a couple on our way home from Cuba who mentioned a website that listed all kinds of things about the Caribbean. I have been unable to locate this website or any similar site. If you could help us we would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. -- T. Davis, Pickering A: When you're ready to plan your Caribbean getaway, log onto the website doitcaribbean.com, which is organized by the Caribbean Tourism Organization. This resource-rich site contains information on more than 30 Caribbean destinations and has links to the island destinations, airlines, accommodations, cruise operators along with handy links for Things To Do, Calendar of Events, Special Deals and more.
