A TD Canada Trust holiday survey found that many Canadians don't look forward to walking in a winter wonderland. In fact, 40 per cent aren't dreaming of a white Christmas and would prefer a tropical climate this holiday season. But, according to the survey, only nine per cent of Canadians will get their wish to travel to a warmer climate. Stacie Pearson, associate vice-president of TD Credit Cards, says using your credit card for all of your holiday purchases can help earn a lot of points. But she warns shoppers to not be tempted to stray from their budget because they are paying on credit rather than with cash. “Make sure you can pay off your balance at the end of the month,'' she said. Pearson says if the holidays aren't the best time of the year to travel, your credit card shouldn't limit you to reward seats or make you book way in advance. “Make sure your card gives you the freedom to redeem your points when you want to,'' she said. She said even the most dedicated bargain hunter may not be as frugal with their reward points as they are with cash. Pearson suggests looking for opportunities to get more bang for the buck. “For instance, with a TD First Class Travel Card, you can book travel at any time,'' she said. “There are no blackout dates or limitations so you can book that bargain last minute deal and use your points to pay the full amount, even the taxes.'' When researching your vacation, research your credit card and rewards program and how they can help finance your trip. Some cards give you more freedom to redeem points for any travel booked with any travel agency or travel provider.
